Dating from almost 10,000 BC, sphinxes are half-human, half-animal creatures. In the Greek tradition, the sphinx was believed to guard the city of Thebes with ferocity and wit. The largest, most famous example of a sphinx today is the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt.
